Reading a Sub-Zero Serial Number for Its Age
Sub-Zero publishes no table for turning a serial number into a build year. The 600 Series tag layout carries a manufacture date beside the serial; on other units the series, the paperwork and the install date narrow the age down. Read the tag to Sub-Zero Repair Redmond on (425) 905-2822 and the unit gets placed.

Find the tag
It sits on the cabinet frame near the upper hinge: behind the refrigerator door of an over-and-under, the freezer door of a side-by-side, or the left door of a French door.

Look for a printed date
Sub-Zero's service manual for the early 600 Series shows a tag with a manufacture date field next to the model and serial, printed as a month and year. If your tag carries one, that is the build date and the search ends here.

Note the letter in front of the serial
On 600 Series tags an M before the serial means the unit was built in Madison, a P means Phoenix. It dates nothing, but it confirms you are reading the serial and not another figure.

On a 600, compare with 1810000
Sub-Zero's service literature divides the 600 Series at serial number 1810000. Below it the unit has the earlier control, which stores no codes; from that number on it has the later control with stored codes.

Find the paperwork
The registration card packed with a BI carries the model and serial, and an installer's invoice gives the installation date, which is the date that matters for warranty questions.

Name the series
A CL model number places the unit in the generation Sub-Zero announced in October 2022 or later. A BI-, a 600-series or a 500-series number means an older line, and the series page for it says what that line uses.
What the serial can and cannot tell you
Sub-Zero does not publish a key for reading a year out of the digits, and guessing one from a pattern in the numbers is how units get misdated. What the tag can give is narrower and more reliable: a printed manufacture date where the layout includes one, the factory letter on a 600, and on a 600 the side of the 1810000 line the unit falls on. That last one changes the repair more than any year would, because it decides whether there are stored codes to read at all.
What else is on an older tag
The 600 Series layout in Sub-Zero’s manual also shows the refrigerant type, the charge for each compartment and the total amps. None of it dates the unit, but a technician reads it before any work on the sealed system, so a legible tag is worth protecting.
Why the serial follows the unit
Sub-Zero files its warranty and service records under the serial number and asks for model and serial whenever the factory or a parts distributor is contacted. The same two numbers are what a parts search on a discontinued unit starts from, which makes the tag, not the age, the useful fact about an old built-in.
