The Wrench Icon on a BI: Lit, Flashing or Chiming

The wrench on a Sub-Zero BI display is its service icon. Lit steady, it may only want the condenser cleaned: switch off at POWER, check behind the grille, switch back on. Check first
  • Steady wrench: POWER off at the control panel, then gloves on for the condenser.
  • The grille pulled out at its bottom edge and swung upward to reach the coil.
  • POWER back on, then whether the wrench is still lit.
Needs a technician
  • A wrench that stays lit after the condenser has been checked.
  • A flashing wrench, with or without the chime.
  • Temperatures, fans and the ice maker traced to what the control flagged.

Three states

Sub-Zero’s BI guide separates them:

  • Lit steady. Turn the unit off at POWER, confirm the condenser area is clean, turn it back on. If the icon stays lit, it needs attention.
  • Flashing. A service call.
  • Flashing with a chime. Also a service call.

A BI gives owners no code number to read. The icon is the whole message, which is why the rest of the panel helps on the phone: the temperatures showing, and whether ice is still being made.

Icons that are not the wrench

The BI display carries several symbols, and they get mixed up:

  • Water-filter icon: lights when the filter is due.
  • Air-purification icon: flashes when the cartridge is due.
  • Bell: the door alarm is switched on. It is not a warning.
  • Ice, max ice and accent-light icons: those features are on.

The grille

The BI condenser sits behind a flip-up grille: pull the bottom edge out and rotate it upward. For this icon, that is as far into the unit as an owner goes.
