Getting the appliance in at all

The hard part of installing a built-in here is not the cabinet opening. It is the small-bore supply line feeding it, because Redmond runs two entirely different waters and the appliance has no idea which one it got. The City of Redmond puts its own groundwater at roughly 90 mg/L as calcium carbonate — about 6 grains per gallon — and its Tolt Reservoir supply at roughly 20 mg/L, about 1.2 grains.

That is a five-fold difference inside one city. The divide follows the Sammamish River: the east side of the city sits on city wells, while the west side and the plateau developments east of the city limits, including Redmond Ridge, are on Tolt water.

So an installer who plumbs a column on Education Hill and one who plumbs an identical column in Idylwood are handing the customer two different maintenance futures, and neither of them mentions it, because from the truck the job looks the same.

What Redmond makes difficult

Hardness is the largest single driver of ice-maker and water-system faults in a built-in refrigerator, and this city has five times as much of it on one side of a river as the other. That means the phrase “not making ice” carries no diagnostic information here until we know the address.

On the groundwater side — Education Hill and the eastern city limits — dissolved mineral leaves the water everywhere it changes state or slows down. It builds on the inlet valve seat, so the valve gradually meters less than it should. It builds in the ice mold and on the fill tube, so cubes come out cloudy, undersized, and eventually welded to the mold. It loads the filter faster than the calendar suggests, which is why the nominal six-month interval is optimistic on that side of the river.

On Tolt water — Overlake, Idylwood and Redmond Ridge — there is essentially nothing to scale up. When one of those addresses stops making ice, hunting for mineral is a waste of an hour. The fault is nearly always the inlet valve itself, a seal at the filter housing, or a fill tube that has frozen and is no longer delivering. Same brand, same complaint, opposite first check.

The uncomfortable part is that most published advice on refrigerator ice faults is written for one hardness or the other and cannot tell you which you are.

The decisions that get made on install day

Four choices get made in about ninety seconds on install day, usually by someone who will never see the appliance again, and all four are worth more on the well side of the river than the reservoir side.

The first is the shutoff. A proper quarter-turn stop on the branch, accessible without pulling the unit, is what makes every later service call quick; a pierced saddle fitting behind a built-in is what makes them slow. The second is the line itself and whether it was flushed before it was connected — construction debris that arrives in the inlet screen on day one looks exactly like scale a year later. The third is filter access: whether the housing can actually be reached and turned once the cabinetry is closed around the unit. The fourth is whether anybody asked what treatment, if any, the house already has upstream.

None of that shows up on the delivery paperwork. All of it shows up in the second-year service history.

What that costs you two years later

On an Education Hill install with a saddle fitting, a never-flushed line and an unreachable filter, the two-year outcome is predictable: small cloudy cubes, a slow or noisy fill, and eventually a valve that will not close cleanly, which puts water where it should not be. What the mineral does not do is cause the other half of the calls we take. A fresh food compartment sitting at 50°F while the freezer stays hard, a compressor that never shuts off, or water collecting under the crisper drawers and freezing into a sheet are airflow, defrost and sealed-system faults, and hardness has nothing to say about them. Those land in other bands entirely. Fan motors, evaporator or condenser: $330 to $740. The defrost heater, thermostat or sensor group: $280 to $660. Door gasket or seal replacement: $300 to $650. An electronic control board: $430 to $890. And, at the top, compressor or sealed-system repair at $1,330 to $3,420.

Knowing which family a fault belongs to before anybody orders a part is most of the value of a diagnosis.

What to ask before the delivery is booked

Ask five questions and you will avoid most of what we get called out for. Which supply does this address receive — city groundwater at about 6 grains, or Tolt at about 1.2? Where will the shutoff be, and can it be reached without moving the unit? Will the line be flushed before connection? Can the filter be changed with the cabinetry closed? And on the well side: given the hardness, what interval should I actually be working to rather than the one printed on the cartridge?

If you are already installed and the answers are unknown, the fastest way to find out is to look at a cube. Clear, full-sized and releasing cleanly means the water side is fine and any fault lies elsewhere. Cloudy, shrinking or sticking, on an address east of the river, tells you where to start before anyone opens a toolbox.

Our ice maker died and we live in Idylwood. Is it scale?
Almost certainly not. Idylwood receives Tolt water at roughly 1.2 grains per gallon, so there is very little mineral available to build up anywhere. On that side of the river a dead ice maker usually points at the inlet valve itself, a seal at the filter housing, or a fill tube that has frozen. Hunting for limescale there burns the first hour of a visit.
